I was almost speechless (and for me that is something) when I received a call from John last week. What fun I have had walking down memory lane the past few days reading the bio’s on the MRHS web page. Bravo everyone involved!
After graduation, I attended UNB for 4 years obtaining a BA in History and Sociology. I still credit John Messenger for my interest in History. I then moved to Toronto and attended OISE and obtained my teaching degree in elementary and high school education. I taught grade 6 for two years in Toronto. It was in Toronto that I met my future husband, Gord Horne. We were married in August 1970 and moved to Winnipeg where he took over his father’s CA practice. I taught for two more years (grade 7–9, language arts and Social studies) until our first daughter was born in July, 1972. Our son followed 16 months later and I became a stay at home Mom.
I became and still am very involved in volunteer work from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, working with delinquent youths, tutoring, working with mentally challenged adults, Hospice and Palliative Care, as well as being politically active.
Once the children were in school I went back to the University of Manitoba and worked on my Masters in Early childhood education. I discovered, however, that Junior High kids was the age level that I liked the best and continued teaching that grade level on a part time basis until 1996.
Gord and I are now both retired. (He retired as managing partner of KPMG in Winnipeg in 2002.) We spend the winter months at our home in Texas and the summer months at our lake home at Lake of the Woods, Kenora, Ontario. Our dogs, Jack and Abby, the Airedales, keep us very active as well as golf which has become my passion. Our two beautiful grandsons moved back from the UK to Calgary last year with our daughter and her husband so it is a lot closer to travel to Calgary than to the UK! Our son has settled in Houston so we see him and his wife during the winter. The lake house has become the gathering place for the whole family in the summer.
