Janis Riven
Janis was the first person to submit a bio when we were starting this website back in December 2008. Here is Janis' 2022 update, followed by the bio she sent back in 2008:
After a great career in business/law that ended with my early retirement from RBC Financial Group (VP Compliance, Corporate Secretary RBC Insurance Worldwide), I returned to my roots and moved to the Laurentians where I have settled into rural life very easily.
Life got even better when Mark (Goldman) and I rediscovered each other almost 50 years after our big date for the Grad dance in 1964. We joyfully live together (even got married!) in the Northern Laurentians with our 2 horses and dog where Mark thrives as a Municipal Counsellor, musician with a Big Band and semi-pro woodworker, while I keep my brain alive as an Adjunct Professor at John Molson School of Business—teach corporate governance to graduate students. I also have a consulting practice (really—I am not just looking for a job!) in governance and compliance. I have overcome my chronic shyness in public and do extensive speaking engagements on governance in Canada and internationally (mostly the Caribbean).
But mostly I am busy trying to stay relevant to my 5 grandchildren ranging from 22–15, who all live in the Montreal area.
And here is Janis' December 2008 bio:
Hello fellow classmates from such a long time ago. After a great career in business/law that ended with my early retirement from RBC Financial Group (VP Compliance, Corporate Secretary RBC Insurance Worldwide), I returned to my roots and moved to the Laurentians where I now live.
I am currently keeping busy as a lecturer at John Molson School of Business—teach corporate governance to graduate students. I also have a consulting practice (really—I am not just looking for a job!) in governance and compliance. I have overcome my chronic shyness in public and do extensive speaking engagements on governance in Canada and internationally (mostly the Caribbean). I am also Past President of an organization called ICSA Canada (www.icsacanada.org) and a director of the international body.
But mostly I am busy with my 5 grandchildren who all live in the Montreal area (hence my “career change”). I am all for another reunion and deeply regret having missed the one in 1989. Just scrolling down the names of my classmates gave me remarkable blasts from the past.
